Kovai Kutralam Closed as Heavy Rains Trigger Flash Floods

The Forest Department has temporarily closed eco-tourism at Kovai Kutralam on July 29, today following heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats triggered a sudden surge in water flow, posing a risk to visitors.

Coimbatore: The Kovai Kutralam Eco-Tourism destination has been temporarily closed from July 29 after a sharp rise in the water flow at the waterfall, triggered by heavy rainfall in the Siruvani hills of the Western Ghats, prompted the Forest Department to suspend visitor entry as a precautionary measure.

Although rainfall had remained sparse across much of the Western Ghats and its catchment areas over the past week, precipitation intensified significantly in the Siruvani ghat region in recent days, resulting in a substantial increase in the inflow to the water falls.

In an advisory, the Boluvampatti Forest Range Officer said the eco-tourism site would remain closed until the water flow subsides and conditions return to normal. Tourists will be allowed entry only after the area is declared safe.

The temporary closure has disappointed several tourists who had planned to visit Kovai Kutralam on Wednesday, with many forced to cancel their trip following the Forest Department’s announcement.
