10 arrested for Drug Peddling in Coimbatore; painkillers seized

Coimbatore City Police arrested four persons for allegedly possessing ganja and intoxicating tablets, while six others were held in separate operations against the illegal sale and transportation of banned tobacco products across the city including RS Puram, Ukkadam and Sowripalayam.

Coimbatore: As part of its sustained drive against narcotics and the illegal tobacco trade, the Coimbatore City Police arrested 10 persons in separate operations across the city, four accused involved in the sale of ganja and intoxicating tablets, and six others booked for possessing and transporting banned tobacco products.

In one of the operations, Ukkadam Police arrested Sahabudheen (23) near the old Ukkadam Bus Stand for allegedly selling pain-relief tablets as intoxicants. Police seized 60 intoxicating tablets from his possession.

In separate ganja-related cases, Nagarajan (39) was arrested near the Sowripalayam cemetery with 1.1 kg of ganja, while Dharmaraj (40) was apprehended on Thondamuthur Road with 1.2 kg of ganja. Mugilan (22) was also arrested in Karthik Nagar after police allegedly recovered 1.1 kg of ganja from him. All four accused were remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, in a parallel crackdown on the illegal sale and distribution of banned tobacco products, police arrested six persons in separate cases across the city.

Among those arrested were Abbas Uddin (36) of West Bengal, who was allegedly selling prohibited cigarettes on D.B. Road in R.S. Puram, and Azhagar Samy (44), who was apprehended in Sukrawarpet for a similar offence.

Police also arrested Ajith Kumar (26) at Veerakeralam after seizing 1.8 kg of banned chewing tobacco, while Kurundhasalam (53) was held in Thudiyalur with 107 packets of prohibited cigarettes in his possession.

In another case, Bharath (39) and Parama Guru Dasing (41) were arrested in Selvapuram for allegedly transporting 78.5 kg of banned tobacco products on a scooter. Ramesh Kumar (55) was also arrested in a separate case related to the illegal sale of prohibited tobacco products.

Police said all the accused have been remanded to judicial custody, and further investigations are under way as the enforcement drive against narcotics and banned tobacco products continues across the city.
