The Coimbatore Corporation has imposed fines totalling ₹4 lakh on four individuals for illegally dumping waste in the Singanallur area, warning that similar violations will invite stringent penalties and legal action under the Solid Waste Management Rules.
Coimbatore: Cracking down on illegal waste disposal, the Coimbatore Corporation has imposed fines totalling ₹4 lakh on four individuals for illegally dumping garbage in the Singanallur area. Each violator has been fined ₹1 lakh, with the civic body reiterating that similar offences will attract strict penalties and legal action.
The action followed a surprise inspection conducted by Corporation officials in the early hours of July 22, during which unauthorised garbage heaps were detected in Singanallur. Acting on the directions of Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, IAS, officials identified those responsible and imposed the penalties.
The Corporation said it has stepped up surveillance and enforcement measures to strengthen solid waste management across all 100 wards of the city. Around 1,215 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste are collected every day from households and commercial establishments, including 835 metric tonnes of wet waste and 380 metric tonnes of dry waste. The waste is segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories before being processed at designated treatment facilities.
To ensure complete door-to-door waste collection, sanitation workers, vehicle drivers and sanitation supervisors have been deployed across all wards, with field operations being closely monitored.
Under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, the Corporation has been carrying out continuous public awareness campaigns, encouraging residents to segregate biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary and special waste at source. The initiatives include pamphlet distribution, awareness rallies, banners, public announcements and wall paintings. Weekly review meetings are also being held across all five zones to assess the progress of solid waste management activities.
The Corporation warned that any individual or establishment found illegally dumping waste or creating unauthorised garbage heaps within city limits will face substantial fines in addition to legal action.
Appealing for public cooperation, the civic body urged residents to segregate waste at source and hand it over only to authorised Corporation sanitation workers, stressing that public participation is essential to maintaining a clean and sustainable city.
