Leopard Spotted on CCTV Near Annur; Villagers Urge Forest Department to Act

A leopard was caught on CCTV prowling through a farm near the Kausika River at Kovilpalayam near Annur, triggering panic among residents. Farmers have urged the Forest Department to install a trap cage before any untoward incident occurs.

Coimbatore: Panic gripped residents of Kovilpalayam near Annur after a leopard was captured on CCTV entering a farm along the banks of the Kausika River during the early hours of Sunday.

The footage, recorded by a surveillance camera installed at the entrance of a farmer’s property, shows the leopard cautiously moving around the premises, apparently in search of prey. The video has since gone viral on social media, triggering concern among residents.

The sighting comes amid a rise in incidents of wild animals venturing into human habitations from the adjoining Western Ghats in search of food and water. The presence of a leopard in an area surrounded by agricultural fields and residential settlements has heightened fears among villagers over the safety of both residents and livestock.

The farmer, who noticed the animal after reviewing the CCTV footage on Sunday morning, alerted local residents and informed the Forest Department. He also shared the footage on social media, urging officials to take immediate preventive measures.

Farmers suspect the leopard may have strayed into the locality in search of livestock, as several farms in the area shelter goats and cattle during the night. They have urged the Forest Department to install a trap cage and intensify surveillance before any untoward incident occurs.

Forest Department officials are expected to inspect the area and monitor the leopard’s movement.
