A police constable, Vinoth Kumar, attached to the Thudiyalur Police Station, was arrested after a 23-year-old woman filed a complaint alleging that he sexually harassed her while questioning her during a patrol duty in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: A police constable attached to the Thudiyalur Police Station was arrested after a 23-year-old woman alleged that he sexually harassed her while questioning her during a night patrol in Coimbatore.
According to the police, Constable Vinoth Kumar (35) and other personnel were on patrol on July 15 when they noticed the woman and her male friend near the Housing Board Phase-II junction in Vellakinar. The duo was intercepted and questioned as part of routine patrol checks.
During the inquiry, Vinoth Kumar allegedly took the woman to a secluded spot on the pretext of conducting further questioning and sexually harassed her, police said.
The woman later informed her male friend about the incident, following which he approached senior police officials and lodged a complaint.
Based on the complaint, the Thudiyalur Police registered a case against the constable under appropriate sections of law, including provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. He was arrested on Saturday, and further investigation is under way.
Police officials said departmental proceedings have also been initiated against the personnel who accompanied the accused constable on patrol duty at the time of the incident.
