Coimbatore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the redeveloped Coonoor Railway Station to the nation through video conferencing on July 17 under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of railway infrastructure while preserving the heritage character of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR).

Located in the Nilgiris district under the Salem Division of Southern Railway, Coonoor Railway Station is among the stations selected for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Tamil Nadu.

The station has been revamped at a cost of ₹12.18 crore with the objective of improving passenger convenience, enhancing accessibility and accommodating the growing tourist footfall, while retaining the historic architecture and heritage value of the UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway.

The redevelopment includes a renovated and expanded station building featuring a larger entrance portico, an enlarged concourse and a modernised booking hall. Passenger amenities have also been upgraded with improved waiting halls, refurbished retiring rooms, a new restaurant building, resurfaced platforms, restored platform shelters, dedicated parking facilities and energy-efficient LED lighting.

The station, which records an average daily footfall of 2,216 passengers, has also been equipped with Divyangjan-friendly facilities, including accessible booking counters, ramps with handrails and accessible toilets, to improve accessibility for all passengers.

According to Southern Railway officials, the upgraded station is expected to enhance the travel experience, support the increasing influx of tourists to the Nilgiris and contribute to the region’s socio-economic development.
