Water Levels Rise in Coimbatore District Dams Due to Southwest Monsoon

As of July 11, Aliyar Dam stands at 55.4 feet, Parambikkulam Dam at 18.24 feet, and Sholaiyar Dam at 91.21 feet in Coimbatore district. Water Resources Department officials report continuous increase in inflow due to southwest monsoon rains across all three major dams.

Coimbatore: Water levels in the three major dams of Coimbatore district - Aliyar, Parambikkulam, and Sholaiyaru - have shown significant rise due to the ongoing southwest monsoon. The Water Resources Department has released the water level status as of July 11, indicating steady inflow across all reservoirs.

Aliyar Dam, located near Anaimalai, has a full capacity of 120 feet. Following consistent rainfall in the catchment areas, the current water level stands at 55.4 feet. The dam is receiving an inflow of 343 cubic feet per second (cusecs), while 200 cusecs is being released for irrigation and other purposes.

Parambikkulam Dam, situated near Pollachi, has a storage capacity of 72 feet. The continued southwest monsoon has increased water inflow from the catchment regions. Currently, the water level has risen to 18.24 feet. The dam is recording an inflow of 1,535 cusecs, with 750 cusecs being discharged downstream.

Sholaiyar Dam in Valparai, the largest of the three with a capacity of 160 feet, presently holds water at 91.21 feet. This reservoir is receiving the highest inflow of 2,659 cusecs, necessitating a discharge of 1,248 cusecs to maintain optimal levels.

Water Resources Department officials stated: "The southwest monsoon continues to bring good rainfall, resulting in substantial water inflow to all three dams. Water levels are gradually increasing, and we are continuously monitoring the situation." They emphasized that all safety protocols are being followed while managing the water discharge.

The rising water levels bring encouraging news for farmers in the region. Agricultural experts anticipate improved irrigation facilities as the monsoon progresses, which will benefit cultivation activities across Coimbatore district. The adequate water storage is expected to support both Kharif crops and provide reserves for the upcoming seasons.

Officials have advised people living in low-lying areas downstream of these dams to remain cautious and stay alert to official announcements regarding water releases. The department continues to monitor rainfall patterns and adjust discharge rates accordingly to ensure both water conservation and public safety.
