Coimbatore Nerunagar Building Owner Fined Rs.50,000 for Dengue Mosquito Larvae in Coimbatore

Coimbatore Corporation health team discovered dengue mosquito larvae in a Nerunagar building and imposed a Rs.50,000 fine on the owner. Large numbers of larvae were found in ground water tanks, lift pits, and drums. Immediate cleaning operations were undertaken following the inspection.

Coimbatore: Under the instructions of Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja IAS, dengue mosquito eradication and sanitation drives are being continuously conducted across all 100 wards of Coimbatore Corporation.

In this context, today (24.06.2026), the Corporation health team conducted a field inspection regarding dengue mosquito eradication works in Nerunagar, part of Maharaja Extension area in Ward 8 under the East Zone. Excessive mosquito larvae were found in ground water tanks, lift pits, drums, and pots inside the building premises.

Immediately after detecting the mosquito larvae, cleaning operations were undertaken. The concerned building owner was fined Rs.50,000 under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939. Additionally, awareness was created about dengue mosquito eradication.

In construction sites within Coimbatore Corporation limits, water is stored in uncovered drums and containers, and rainwater accumulates in tyres, cups, and coconut shells. Mosquitoes lay eggs in these, and the emerging mosquitoes spread dengue fever.

The Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue does not breed in sewage water but only in clean water. This mosquito bites only during daytime. There is a possibility of Aedes mosquitoes laying eggs and breeding in clean water present in fridge trays inside homes.

The Corporation has been continuously advising citizens to maintain cleanliness around their homes and remove coconut shells, mortars, broken plastic items, and unused tyres near buildings.

People are advised to maintain plant pots without water stagnation, keep containers used for storing cooking and drinking water covered, and change the water frequently.

Money plants grown in homes are kept with water. This mosquito can breed in that water. Since this mosquito can breed in air cooler water, air coolers should be cleaned frequently and water should be changed.

Upper floors and surroundings of buildings should be maintained without water stagnation.

The Corporation has advised that if containers breeding dengue mosquito larvae are found in open spaces, those establishments will be issued notices and fined under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939.

Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja IAS stated that although dengue mosquito eradication works are being continuously undertaken by the Corporation, the public must maintain their surroundings safely and participate with awareness in preventing dengue fever.
