CODISSIA Meets CM, Seeks Policy Support to Strengthen Coimbatore’s MSME Ecosystem

CODISSIA, led by its President Karthikeyan, met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and sought government support for key MSME priorities, including enhanced access to credit, a Raw Material Bank, solar power incentives, and new industrial parks around Coimbatore to drive industrial growth and employment generation.

Coimbatore: A delegation from the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA), led by its President Karthikeyan, met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Chennai on Wednesday and submitted a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at strengthening the MSME sector and accelerating industrial development in the region.

The delegation comprised V. Rangaswamy, Vice President, CODISSIA; M.V. Ramesh Babu, Honorary Secretary, COINTEC; and V. Sundaram, Director, CODISSIA Defence Innovation and Atal Incubation Centre (CDIIC).

During the interaction, CODISSIA outlined several structural challenges confronting micro, small and medium enterprises and sought the Chief Minister’s intervention on issues critical to the sector’s growth, competitiveness, and long term sustainability. The association emphasized that despite MSMEs serving as a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu’s industrial economy and employment landscape, access to timely and affordable credit continues to remain a significant bottleneck, particularly for micro enterprises.

Drawing attention to the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme, CODISSIA noted that Tamil Nadu accounted for only about ₹20,000 crore of the nearly ₹3 lakh crore sanctioned across the country during 2024-25. Of this, Coimbatore received just ₹2,116 crore, a figure the association said falls far short of the region’s stature as one of India’s most vibrant manufacturing and MSME clusters.

To strengthen supply chain resilience and improve the availability of industrial inputs, the association proposed the establishment of a Raw Material Bank in Coimbatore on the lines of a centralised stockyard. Such a facility, it said, would ensure uninterrupted access to essential materials, reduce procurement uncertainties, and enhance cost competitiveness for MSMEs.

The delegation also advocated measures to accelerate renewable energy adoption among industries, including the waiver of network charges for rooftop solar installations and a 25 per cent capital subsidy for rooftop and ground mounted solar systems up to 150 KW capacity. With power demand rising steadily year after year, CODISSIA observed that encouraging decentralised solar generation would help industries manage escalating energy costs while advancing the State’s sustainability objectives.

Highlighting the need for future industrial expansion, the association urged the State Government to establish at least three industrial parks of around 1,000 acres each within a 25 kilometre radius of Coimbatore. According to CODISSIA, such integrated industrial hubs would further strengthen the region’s manufacturing ecosystem by fostering closer collaboration between large industries and MSME suppliers, creating robust supply chains and unlocking new investment opportunities.

The association expressed confidence that timely policy interventions on these issues would enhance the competitiveness of MSMEs, attract fresh investments, generate employment, and further consolidate Coimbatore’s position as one of India’s premier manufacturing and engineering hubs.
