Sulur Minor Girl Murder Case: POCSO Court Grants 3-Day Police Custody

Coimbatore POCSO Court grants three days police custody for Karthik and Mohanraj, accused of abducting, sexually assaulting, and murdering a 10-year-old girl near Sulur. Court granted custody until June 6 after in-camera proceedings amid tight security.

Coimbatore: The Special POCSO Court in Coimbatore has granted three days of police custody for Karthik and Mohanraj, arrested in connection with the alleged abduction, sexual assault, and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur. The accused will remain in police custody until June 6.

The two accused were produced before the court under tight security after the investigation team sought five days of police custody to facilitate further questioning and evidence collection. Police informed the court that custodial interrogation was necessary to gather additional evidence, verify statements, and recover material objects believed to be connected to the case.

Given the sensitive nature of the matter and heightened public attention surrounding the case, Special POCSO Judge Bhagavathi Ammal conducted the proceedings in camera inside a closed courtroom. The accused were questioned separately before the court considered the custody petition.

After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence, the court granted police custody for three days instead of the five days sought by investigators. The order came following detailed submissions by the prosecution regarding the need for custodial interrogation to advance the investigation.

The case pertains to the death of a 10-year-old girl from Kannampalayam near Sulur. Karthik and Mohanraj were arrested by police and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. Investigators have been intensifying their probe, as the charge sheet is required to be filed within the stipulated timeframe under POCSO Act provisions.

Earlier, a Test Identification Parade was conducted at Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial supervision, during which witnesses reportedly identified the accused. This procedural step formed part of the evidence-gathering process in the case.

Investigators are expected to use the three-day custody period to reconstruct the sequence of events, corroborate witness statements, and collect additional evidence. and build a comprehensive case file before submitting the charge sheet within the mandatory timeframe prescribed under the POCSO Act.
