Coimbatore District Panchayat Bags Prestigious National Award for Excellence in Governance

Coimbatore District Panchayat has secured third place nationally in the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar category under the National Panchayat Awards 2025 for its exemplary performance in poverty alleviation, water management, and administration during 2023-24.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Panchayat has been honored with the National Panchayat Award, marking a significant achievement in local governance and rural development. The recognition was announced by Dr. Vijayakumar Behera, Economic Advisor of the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

According to the official announcement, the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj has declared the National Panchayat Awards for 2025, selecting 42 panchayats that demonstrated outstanding performance during the assessment year 2023-24. Among these, Coimbatore District Panchayat has secured the third position at the national level under the prestigious 'Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar' category.

The top honors in this category went to Sepahijala District Panchayat from Tripura, which claimed the first position, followed by Ganjam District Panchayat from Odisha in second place. Coimbatore's achievement places Tamil Nadu prominently on the national map for exemplary local governance.

Dr. Behera explained that these awards are conferred upon local bodies that have excelled in implementing nine key objectives, including poverty alleviation, water management, and best administrative practices. The comprehensive evaluation recognizes panchayats that have made significant strides in sustainable development and efficient governance.

Officials have confirmed that the award ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 3, where the Coimbatore District Panchayat will receive this prestigious recognition. The award not only acknowledges past achievements but also sets a benchmark for other local bodies across the country.

The Union Government has urged other local governing bodies to study and adopt the successful practices implemented by the award-winning panchayats as models for their own development initiatives. This recognition is expected to inspire greater innovation and dedication in rural governance across India.
