Coimbatore: In a major seizure ahead of elections, Flying Squad officials confiscated gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 10.18 crore from a van in Kodiissia area under Singanallur constituency on April 15.

The operation was conducted by Flying Squad Officer Saminathan, along with Assistant Sub-Inspector Jilly Kristy and team, who were conducting routine vehicle checks in the area on Tuesday evening.

During the inspection, officials stopped a van passing through the area and upon examination, discovered it was carrying gold and diamond jewellery. The officials immediately detained the vehicle and began questioning the driver.

The driver identified himself as Athiveerapandiyan and stated that he was transporting the jewellery to a private firm. However, when asked to produce the necessary documentation for transporting such valuable items, he failed to provide any valid papers.

Due to the absence of proper documentation, the Flying Squad officials seized the entire consignment and deposited it in the government treasury. Upon assessment, the total value of the confiscated jewellery was calculated to be Rs 10 crore 18 lakh 21 thousand.

This seizure is part of the intensified vigilance operations being conducted across Coimbatore district during the election period. According to officials, between Tuesday morning and Wednesday, vehicle checks conducted at various locations across the district have resulted in the seizure of cash and materials worth Rs 22.86 lakh.

The election authorities have intensified surveillance activities across all constituencies to ensure free and fair elections, with special focus on preventing the transportation of unaccounted money and valuables that could potentially influence voters.
