A 45-year-old woman from Dharmapuri district had her 8 sovereign gold chain snatched by an unidentified man near Nehru Nagar West bus stop in Coimbatore. Peelamedu police have registered a case and are investigating the incident that occurred on the night of January 11.

Coimbatore: A chain snatching incident has sent shockwaves through Nehru Nagar area after a woman lost her 8 sovereign gold chain to an unidentified snatcher on Saturday night.

Prabhavathi (45), a resident of Nagamarai area in Dharmapuri district, visited her relative's house in Coimbatore on January 11. She was returning home on a two-wheeler with her son when the incident occurred.

As they were passing near Nehru Nagar West bus stop, an unidentified man riding a bike from behind swooped in and snatched the 8 sovereign gold mangalsutra chain from Prabhavathi's neck in a matter of seconds. The sudden attack left both the victim and her son shocked.

Though Prabhavathi and her son immediately raised an alarm and attempted to chase the thief, the miscreant managed to escape at lightning speed before neighbors could arrive at the scene. The skilled snatcher disappeared into the night before anyone could intervene or note down the vehicle details.

Following the incident, Prabhavathi approached Peelamedu police station yesterday and filed a formal complaint. Based on her complaint, the police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the chain snatching.

Peelamedu police are currently examining CCTV footage from the area and are on the lookout for the suspect. Special teams have been formed to trace and apprehend the chain snatcher at the earliest. Police suspect this could be the work of an organized gang that has been targeting women commuters in isolated areas during night hours.

Authorities have advised citizens, especially women, to be vigilant while traveling during late hours and to avoid wearing expensive jewelry while commuting on two-wheelers. The investigation is ongoing.
