Liquor Shops in Coimbatore to Remain Closed on March 31 for Mahavir Jayanti

Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar has ordered the closure of all government liquor outlets, bars, and hotels serving alcohol on March 31, 2026, Tuesday, observing Mahavir Jayanti as a dry day. Violators will face action under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act 1937.


Coimbatore: All government liquor shops, bars, and establishments serving alcohol across Coimbatore district will remain closed on March 31, 2026, Tuesday, in observance of Mahavir Jayanti, which has been declared a dry day.

District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar issued the order on March 28, directing the closure of all liquor outlets including government liquor stores, bars (FL), recreational clubs (11.2), star hotels (FL), establishments operated by Tamil Nadu Hotel (FLA) Tourism Department (FL3AA), and outlets selling imported foreign liquor varieties (FL).

The order prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages on this day. Anyone found selling liquor in violation of these regulations, illegally stocking alcohol, or transporting liquor from one place to another will face strict action under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act 1937, the Collector warned.

The dry day notification is part of the traditional observance of Mahavir Jayanti, an important religious occasion. Authorities have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the order across all licensed establishments in the district.

The Collector emphasized that law enforcement agencies will conduct vigilant monitoring to prevent any violations and that legal action will be taken against offenders without exception.
