Electricity Tariff Cut: Will It Be The Election Game Changer?

Coimbatore industrialists have stated that promises regarding electricity tariff reduction will play a crucial role in the victory of political parties in the upcoming assembly elections. Demands include 50 percent reduction in fixed charges and demand charges, and stopping annual tariff hikes.

Coimbatore: Industrialists from Coimbatore have stated that promises related to electricity tariff reduction will play a crucial role in determining the victory of political parties in the upcoming assembly elections.

Former President of Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association Pradeep, Recycling Textile Industry Federation President Jayapal, Treasurer of Tamil Nadu Solar Power Producers Association Sastha Raja, and Railway Distributors Association President Suruli Vel have elaborated on this matter.

They stated: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, MSME manufacturing units have been facing severe crisis due to various reasons including rising raw material costs and high GST tax impositions.

Tamil Nadu is the third state in India with 47 lakh micro, small and medium enterprise entrepreneurs. Currently, the ongoing wars between Iran-Israel and Russia-Ukraine have created a massive impact on the global market.

In this situation, compared to 10 other competitive states in the domestic market, Tamil Nadu charges the highest electricity tariff. The currently applicable fixed charges and demand charges should both be reduced by 50 percent.

Similarly, the network charges imposed on solar power generation entrepreneurs should be removed. Above all, the practice of annual electricity tariff hikes must be completely abandoned.

Despite an 8-phase agitation conducted by various industrial organizations in Tamil Nadu demanding electricity tariff reduction in the context of crisis in industries due to rising raw material costs and other reasons, electricity tariffs have not been reduced.

Therefore, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, political parties that fulfill industry demands related to the power sector, including electricity tariff reduction, in their election manifesto will see favorable election results.
