Students Suffer as Rainwater Stagnates at Government School Near Tirupur

Heavy rainfall causes waterlogging at Palla Goundampalayam, Saravanpuram Government High School near Tirupur, disrupting students' education and raising health concerns. Parents stage sudden protest demanding immediate action.

Tirupur: Students at the Palla Goundampalayam, Saravanpuram Government High School near Tirupur are facing severe difficulties due to stagnant rainwater on the school premises.

The waterlogging has created unsanitary conditions and poses a risk of disease outbreak, prompting concerned parents to stage a sudden protest.

The school, located in Nadupatti Panchayat of Uthukuli Taluk in Tirupur district, has 648 students from 6th to 12th grade.

Following an hour of heavy rainfall last night, the school grounds were inundated, forcing students to wade through mud and water to reach their classrooms.

The Parent-Teacher Association has submitted over 20 petitions to various officials, including the Village Administrative Officer, Tahsildar, and District Collector, requesting to fill the low-lying areas of the playground to prevent water stagnation. However, no action has been taken so far.

The stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising concerns about the spread of dengue and malaria among students. Last year, a similar situation led to a student injuring her leg after falling in the waterlogged area, which resulted in parents staging a road blockade.

Despite assurances from the district administration to address the issue following last year's protest, no concrete steps have been taken. Parents expressed their disappointment, stating that they have approached various officials, including District Minister M.P. Saminathan, MP K. Subbarayan, and the local MLA, seeking funds for school maintenance, but to no avail.

With the ongoing rainy season, there is an urgent need for the district administration and the education department to take immediate action to prevent water stagnation in the school playground. This remains the primary expectation of all concerned parties.

Meanwhile, the Tirupur Corporation has set up a control room for flood rescue operations during the rainy season. Affected residents and those in low-lying areas can contact 0421-2321500 or the toll-free number 1800-425-7023 for immediate assistance.
