Coimbatore: In a collaborative effort to combat tobacco use and promote healthier communities, the CSW Foundation and the District Tobacco Control Cell conducted a comprehensive awareness campaign on October 2, 2024. The initiative, organized as a Grama Sabha, took place across six villages in the Coimbatore district: Keeranathm, Ashokapuram, Kurudmplayam, Kuppanur, Oddarpalayam, and Pillichinnampalayam.

The event brought together key stakeholders and experts in the field of tobacco control and community health. Dr. Saranya Devi, District Consultant of the District Tobacco Control Cell, led the campaign alongside Mr. Murali Krishnan, a Social Worker from the same organization. They were joined by Mr. Thoufiq, a Psychologist, and representatives from the CSW Foundation, including Trustee and Secretary Harish Kumar, Joint Secretary Fazil Rahman, and Program Coordinator Lekha.

The Grama Sabha served as a platform for informative discussions on the detrimental effects of tobacco use on individual and community health. Experts shared insights on the various health risks associated with tobacco consumption and emphasized the importance of prevention strategies. The event also highlighted the role of community support in encouraging tobacco-free lifestyles.

Students from Kumaraguru College, Krishna College, and PSG College actively participated in the campaign, demonstrating the engagement of younger generations in this crucial public health issue. Their involvement added a fresh perspective to the discussions and helped in reaching out to a broader audience.

A significant moment of the event was the collective pledge taken by all participants for tobacco awareness. This commitment not only reinforced the message of the campaign but also empowered attendees to become advocates for a tobacco-free lifestyle in their respective communities.

Both the CSW Foundation and the District Tobacco Control Cell expressed their dedication to continuing this vital work. They emphasized the importance of sustained efforts in fostering awareness and supporting healthier community practices.

The organizers extended their heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their enthusiasm and commitment to creating a healthier future for their villages. This collaborative initiative marks a significant step towards reducing tobacco use and its associated health risks in rural areas of Coimbatore district.

As the campaign concluded, there was a palpable sense of optimism among the organizers and participants alike. The success of this Grama Sabha has set a positive precedent for future health awareness initiatives in the region, promising a healthier and more informed community in the years to come.
