Coimbatore: The World Elderly Day celebration was held today at Ukkadam Periyakulam in Coimbatore, organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Women's Rights in collaboration with private charitable organizations and volunteers.

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati participated in the event.

More than a hundred senior citizens from various old age homes took part in the celebration. As a highlight of the event, the District Collector went on a boat ride with the elderly in Ukkadam Periyakulam.

Following this, in a ceremony, the Collector presented commemorative gifts to the residents of old age homes. The participating seniors were also provided with lunch and arrangements were made for them to visit the ongoing exhibition at VOC grounds.

Speaking to reporters during the event, the District Collector stated that various welfare schemes, including medical check-ups, are being provided by different government departments for the well-being of the elderly. He added that the district administration would take further steps to encourage such initiatives.

When questioned about the soil extraction survey conducted in Thondamuthur and Anaikatti areas of Coimbatore for the past two days, the Collector responded that the inspection was carried out jointly by the District Legal Services Authority Chairman, District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and Forest Department officials, as per the High Court's guidelines. He mentioned that 19 locations were inspected, and the quality of the soil and actions already taken were examined. He added that a report on this would be submitted to the High Court.

Addressing a query about public complaints regarding a private resort operating in the Anaikatti area during the inspection, the Collector acknowledged that some people had raised issues, particularly about access routes. He stated that the Chairman would make a decision on this matter and that if a petition is submitted to the district administration regarding the resort issue, an investigation would be conducted.
