A 30-year-old North Indian youth was arrested in Coimbatore for smuggling gutka and cool lip worth Rs. 75,000 on his bike. The suspect falsely claimed he was transporting snacks for sale.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Race Course police arrested a 30-year-old North Indian youth for smuggling banned gutka and cool lip products worth Rs. 75,000 on his motorcycle. The suspect, identified as Sukharaj from the Town Hall area, was caught during a routine police patrol near the Coimbatore Women's Polytechnic College on September 23.

During the patrol, police officers stopped and questioned Sukharaj, who was riding a motorcycle. When asked about the contents of the bundle he was carrying, Sukharaj claimed he was transporting snacks for sale. However, suspicious of his response, the police decided to inspect the bundle.

Upon examination, the officers discovered that the bundle contained banned gutka and cool lip products instead of the claimed snacks. The total value of the seized items was estimated at Rs. 75,000. Following this discovery, Sukharaj was immediately arrested by the police.

The Race Course police also seized the motorcycle used for smuggling the contraband. Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the banned products and to identify any potential links to larger distribution networks in the city.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the illegal trade of banned tobacco products in Coimbatore. The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to the sale or distribution of such prohibited items.
