Rare Heart Defect in Newborn: Successful Surgery at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore

A 7-day-old infant with a critical heart defect was successfully operated on at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore. The baby was transported from Trichy Government Hospital via a green corridor for emergency surgery.

Coimbatore: In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital in Coimbatore successfully performed a critical heart surgery on a 7-day-old infant born with a rare congenital heart defect. The newborn was initially admitted to Trichy Government Hospital, where the heart condition was diagnosed.

Upon discovery of the heart defect, it was decided to transfer the infant to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital in Coimbatore for advanced treatment. The baby, who was on ventilator support since birth, was transported from Trichy to Coimbatore in just two and a half hours via a special green corridor. The ambulance was equipped with a mobile ventilator and necessary medical equipment, accompanied by a pediatrician and a nurse for continuous medical monitoring.

At Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, an emergency surgery was planned and executed by a team of doctors led by Dr. Vijay Sadasivam, along with Dr. Manfred Fernando, Dr. Narendran Menen, and Dr. Manikandan. Post-operative care is being overseen by Dr. Siddhartha Buddhavarapu, Dr. Deva Prasad, and Dr. Suja Mariam, with the infant under close observation in the NICU.

The hospital administration has reported that the baby is now in good health and is expected to be discharged in one or two days, as recommended by the doctors. They also expressed gratitude to the Trichy and Coimbatore City Police for efficiently coordinating the green corridor, ensuring the timely arrival of the infant.

In a press conference held today at the Sri Ramakrishna Hospital auditorium, the medical team, in the presence of Mr. Sundar, Joint Managing Trustee of SNR Sons Charitable Trust, shared details about the case. They stated that congenital heart defects occur in 1 out of 100 children, with approximately 240,000 children being affected annually. One-third of these cases require immediate surgical intervention. The doctors emphasized that with timely and appropriate surgery, children with heart defects can fully recover and lead healthy lives.

The mother of the infant, who is a nurse by profession, expressed her initial distress upon learning about her child's condition. She conveyed her heartfelt gratitude to the ambulance driver who transported her baby from Trichy to Coimbatore, as well as to the surgical team and the doctors currently monitoring her child. She happily reported that the baby is now healthy and they are looking forward to returning home soon.
