Coimbatore Government School Students Win Gold in World Silambam Championship in Kerala

Two students from Sugunapuram Government School in Coimbatore have brought glory by winning gold medals in the World Silambam Championship held in Kerala from September 4th to 6th, 2024.


Coimbatore: Two students from Sugunapuram Government High School in Coimbatore have brought pride to their institution by clinching gold medals in the World Silambam Championship 2024 held in Kerala.

The World Silambam Championship 2024, organized by the World Silambam Federation, took place from September 4th to 6th at the Jimmy George Indoor Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The event saw participation from over 300 athletes representing nine countries, including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Singapore.

In this prestigious competition, the Indian team emerged as the overall champion. Durai Anand, a 10th-grade student from Sugunapuram Government High School, secured a gold medal in the 60-65 kg Junior category (Stick Fight). Similarly, Liyasri, an 8th-grade student from the same school, clinched gold in the 40-44 kg Sub-Junior category (Stick Fight).

The outstanding performance of these young athletes has brought immense pride to their school. The school's acting principal, Shanti, along with physical education teachers Vijayalakshmi and Sekar, congratulated the winners for their remarkable achievement. Fellow students and teachers continue to extend their wishes and congratulations to the gold medalists.

This victory not only highlights the talent of these Coimbatore students but also underscores the importance of traditional martial arts like Silambam in today's competitive sports arena.
