Nipah Virus Outbreak: Health Officials Intensify Surveillance at Kerala Borders in Coimbatore District

Health officials in Coimbatore district have heightened surveillance at Kerala borders following the Nipah virus outbreak. Precautionary measures are being implemented to prevent the spread of the virus into Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore: In response to the resurgence of the Nipah virus in Kerala, health officials in Coimbatore district have intensified surveillance measures along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. This action comes in the wake of two confirmed deaths due to Nipah virus infection in Kerala's Kozhikode district.

The first casualty was reported on September 9, when a person who had traveled from Bengaluru to Malappuram in Kerala succumbed to the virus. Subsequently, on September 15, a 24-year-old youth who was undergoing treatment for Nipah virus infection also passed away. Following these incidents, authorities have imposed restrictions in the affected areas of Thiruvananthapuram Gram Panchayat and Mambat Gram Panchayat.

In Kerala's Malappuram district, the administration has implemented strict measures to contain the virus spread. All residents have been instructed to wear face masks, and public gatherings have been prohibited. Schools and colleges in the affected areas have been closed as a precautionary step.

As part of the heightened vigilance, health department officials in Coimbatore district are conducting thorough screenings at the Kerala borders on September 16. All individuals entering Tamil Nadu from Kerala are being subjected to mandatory health checks before being allowed to cross the border.

The Tamil Nadu government has also ramped up preventive measures in districts bordering Kerala. These steps are aimed at early detection and prevention of any potential Nipah virus cases entering the state.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious symptoms to the nearest health facility. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
