Wild elephant intrusion causes panic in village near Mettupalayam

A wild elephant, known as Bahubali, entered Umapalaiyam village near Mettupalayam, causing panic among residents. The incident occurred when the elephant strayed from Kallar forest area, crossing the Kotagiri road.

Coimbatore: Residents of Umapalaiyam village near Mettupalayam experienced tense moments when a wild elephant, locally known as Bahubali, entered their residential area. The incident occurred late last night when the elephant strayed from the Kallar forest area, crossing the Kotagiri road.

The elephant was part of a herd that had moved from the Kallar forest to the Odanthurai reserve forest in the Sirumugai forest range. While the rest of the herd entered the forest, Bahubali deviated and wandered into the populated area of Umapalaiyam village.

Caught off guard by the sudden appearance of the wild elephant, villagers were initially frightened. Some attempted to drive the animal back into the forest by making loud noises. However, the situation took an interesting turn when a woman in the crowd suggested praying to the elephant, believing it would make the animal leave.

Following her lead, the women in the village began to pray, addressing the elephant as "Saami" (God) and asking it to depart. Surprisingly, upon hearing this commotion, the elephant halted its advance and remained stationary.

The Sirumugai Forest Department was immediately alerted about the situation. Forest officials quickly arrived at the scene and began efforts to guide the elephant back into the forest area.

This incident has once again highlighted the increasing human-wildlife conflict in the region. The Mettupalayam and Sirumugai forest ranges, which are part of dense forest areas, have seen a rise in wild elephant movements. These animals often venture out of the forests at night in search of food and water, damaging agricultural crops in nearby villages. In some cases, these encounters have even led to loss of human lives.

The forest department has been working on measures to mitigate such conflicts and ensure the safety of both villagers and wildlife. However, incidents like these continue to create moments of panic and excitement in the villages bordering the forest areas.
