2 held for abetment of suicide

The city police arrested two people on Monday for abetment of suicide of their neighbour at New Siddhapudur here on Sunday night. Police said that the deceased, V Ranganathan, 37, was frustrated on Sunday, after his neighbours alleged that he was involved in the recent burning of household articles.

The man reportedly told his neighbours that he was out of town when the incident happened but no one seemed to believe him. Instead, they told him that if he did not have the courage to attack them, he should kill himself.

Police said, Ranganathan and his family lived at Haripuram near Siddhapudur here. He had previous enmity with his neighbour P Rajkamal, 37 and the neighbours often quarrelled with each other.

On Sunday, Rajkamal had noticed that a few sandals and brooms were destroyed in a fire and he suspected Ranganathan behind the incident. When Rajkamal questioned Ranganathan, he said he had gone to work and returned home only on Sunday. Regardless, Rajkamal and his family beat him severely.

When Ranganathan told his attackers that he would kill himself, no one believed him, they encouraged him to do so. Subsequently, he locked himself inside his room. When he did not come out of his room, his family checked and found that he had hanged himself. The body was taken to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

Police said Ranganathan often quarrelled with his family and locked himself up in his room. Thus, when he confined himself to his room, they did not think much of it. It was only when he failed to come out for hours did they realize the matter was serious, but it was too late.

Based on a complaint filed by the family, Race Course police registered a case against Rajkumar and his relative P Thiyagu, 40, a daily wage labourer under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested them. They have been lodged at Coimbatore central prison. Police said, four more people will be arrested in connection with the case.
