Coimbatore: A tribal man was seriously injured in an elephant attack near Udumalaipettai in Tiruppur district on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the Thirumalai hill village within the Udumalaipettai forest range of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

Venkittan, a 50-year-old resident of the Kurumalai tribal settlement, was attacked by a wild elephant while he was engaged in cultivation work. He sustained severe injuries in the attack. Following the incident, fellow tribal residents carried him on a makeshift stretcher to the nearest hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The tribal community has been continuously protesting for better road facilities to meet their emergency needs. They expressed their frustration, stating, "We have been fighting for proper road access to fulfill our urgent and essential needs. However, to date, the authorities have not taken any action to address this issue. This delay causes obstacles in obtaining emergency aid during accidents. The critical time for receiving treatment is often lost in the struggle to reach medical facilities, potentially leading to loss of life."

The tribal residents also demanded the establishment of government primary health centers within their settlements to improve access to healthcare services.

Meanwhile, Udumalaipettai Forest Range Officer Manikandan visited Venkittan at the Udumalaipettai Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. The officer offered words of comfort and provided an initial financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 on behalf of the Forest Department.
