Final Flood Warning Issued as Parambikulam Reservoir Nears Full Capacity

Authorities issued the third and final flood warning for Parambikulam reservoir on Tuesday as water level reached 70.41 ft, nearing its full capacity of 72 ft due to heavy rainfall in catchment areas.

Coimbatore: The Parambikulam reservoir, a crucial water source in the region, is on the brink of reaching its full capacity, prompting authorities to issue the third and final flood warning on Tuesday. The reservoir's water level has surged to 70.41 feet, merely 1.59 feet short of its full reservoir level of 72 feet.

The dramatic rise in water levels is attributed to the copious rainfall received in the catchment areas of Sholayar and Parambikulam over the past month. These areas have experienced torrential downpours, significantly boosting the reservoir's storage.

Currently, the inflow into the Parambikulam reservoir stands at 1,097 cusecs, while the discharge is being maintained at 1,017 cusecs. The reservoir now holds an impressive 17,455 mcft of water, close to its total storage capacity of 17,820 mcft.

The flood warning system for the reservoir operates in three stages. The first warning was issued when the water level reached 62 feet, followed by the second alert at 65 feet. With the water level rapidly approaching the brim, authorities have now sounded the final flood warning.

If the dam's sluices are opened due to further increase in water levels, the released water would flow to Perungalkuthu. From there, it would traverse through Chalakkudy and the picturesque Athirapally falls before ultimately draining into the Arabian Sea.

The situation highlights the impact of recent heavy rainfall in the region and underscores the importance of careful water management in the face of potential flooding. Authorities are closely monitoring the water levels and are prepared to take necessary actions to ensure the safety of downstream areas.
