Mettupalayam - Ooty Mountain Railway Service Resumes Operations

The Mettupalayam-Ooty Mountain Railway service, suspended due to landslides caused by heavy rains, has resumed operations from August 7. The service was initially expected to remain cancelled until August 15.


Coimbatore: The Mettupalayam-Ooty Mountain Railway service, which was suspended due to landslides caused by heavy rains, has resumed operations earlier than expected. The Southern Railway Salem Division administration has announced that the service will recommence from August 7, 2023.

The mountain railway service was initially suspended on August 1 due to landslides between Adderley and Hillgrove railway stations. The heavy rains had caused significant damage to the tracks, forcing the authorities to halt the service for safety reasons.

Initially, the Southern Railway Salem Division had issued a statement on the evening of August 6, announcing that the service would remain cancelled until August 15. However, in a swift turn of events, they have now revised their decision and declared that the train service will resume operations from August 7.

This news comes as a relief to both locals and tourists who rely on this iconic mountain railway for transportation between Mettupalayam and Ooty. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, as it is officially known, is not just a mode of transport but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction.

The early resumption of the service indicates that the repair and restoration work on the damaged tracks has been completed ahead of schedule. It also suggests that the authorities have deemed the route safe for train operations after necessary inspections and safety checks.

Passengers planning to travel on this route are advised to check with the railway authorities for the exact schedule and any potential changes in timings as the service resumes.
