Three Arrested for Assaulting and Robbing Vendor Near Selvapuram

Three men were arrested in Coimbatore for assaulting and robbing a 55-year-old snack vendor near Selvapuram on July 27. The police recovered a knife and three mobile phones from the suspects.


Coimbatore: The Selvapuram police have arrested three individuals for allegedly assaulting and robbing a street vendor near Selvapuram on July 27. The victim, identified as Mohamed Kareem (55), a resident of Perur Main Road in Selvapuram, was selling snacks from his push cart when the incident occurred.

According to police reports, Mohamed Kareem was conducting his business near the Selva Vinayagar Temple in Indira Nagar, Selvapuram, when three men approached him. The trio demanded Rs. 1,000 from Kareem, threatening him at knifepoint. When Kareem refused to comply, the assailants verbally abused him, physically assaulted him, and forcibly took Rs. 500 from him before fleeing the scene.

Following the incident, Mohamed Kareem filed a complaint with the Selvapuram police station. The police investigation revealed the identities of the three suspects: Karthigai Selvam (27) from Telungupalayam Udaiyar Street, Arjun (23) from North Housing Unit in Selvapuram, and Prakash (24) from South Housing Unit in Kalla Medu.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the police arrested all three suspects. During the arrest, the authorities recovered a knife and three mobile phones from their possession. The accused have been remanded to custody, and further investigations are underway.

This incident has raised concerns about the safety of small-scale vendors in the area. Local authorities have assured the public that they are taking necessary measures to enhance security and prevent such occurrences in the future.
