Women Self-Help Group Member Receives First Namo Drone Didi Scheme Drone in Coimbatore District

A member of a women's self-help group in Coimbatore district received the first drone under the Namo Drone Didi scheme, marking a significant milestone in agricultural innovation and women's empowerment.

Coimbatore: In a significant development for women's empowerment and agricultural innovation, a member of a women's self-help group in Coimbatore district has become the first recipient of a drone under the Namo Drone Didi scheme.

The Union Cabinet recently announced the Namo Drone Didi scheme, allocating 15,000 drones to women's self-help groups across the country. With a budget of Rs 1,261 crore, the initiative aims to provide drone training and licenses to 1,095 women from self-help groups nationwide for agricultural purposes in its first phase.

Of the 44 women's self-help groups selected from Tamil Nadu, Vasanthamani from the Badrakali Amman Women's Self-Help Group in Ramapatinam Panchayat, Pollachi (North) block of Coimbatore district, has been chosen as a beneficiary. She received drone training, obtained a license, and was provided with a drone valued between six to eight lakh rupees.

Vasanthamani, who practices natural farming in her area, was selected by Women's Program Officers for this initiative. She received her drone training and license in Chennai before being presented with the drone. Today, she demonstrated the drone's operation before the District Collector during a farmers' grievance redressal meeting at the Coimbatore District Collector's office.

The drone can be used to spray liquid fertilizers and natural fish acids in agricultural fields. This technology is expected to benefit both the self-help group members and farmers in the region. The women can rent out the drones to farmers, creating an income source for themselves and the PLF federation while providing valuable services to the agricultural community.

This initiative under the Namo Drone Didi scheme marks a significant step towards integrating technology in agriculture and empowering women in rural areas of Coimbatore district.
