Aliyar Dam Reaches Full Capacity: Surplus Water Released, Flood Alert Issued

Continuous rains in Western Ghats fill Aliyar Dam near Pollachi. 1,210 cusecs of surplus water released through 11 sluice gates. Flood alert issued to residents along riverbanks.

Coimbatore: The Aliyar Dam near Pollachi has reached its full capacity due to persistent rains in the Western Ghats. As a precautionary measure, authorities have opened 11 sluice gates to release 1,210 cubic feet per second of surplus water into the Aliyar River. A flood alert has been issued to residents living along the riverbanks.

Over the past few days, Pollachi and the Western Ghats region have been experiencing heavy rainfall. This has led to increased water inflow into the Sholayar, Aliyar, and Parambikulam dams, causing rapid rise in water levels. Today, the Aliyar Dam reached its full capacity of 120 feet.

Before releasing the water, authorities sounded a warning siren to alert the public about the potential flood risk. Officials welcomed the water release by showering flower petals. The water discharge is being closely monitored to ensure the safety of the dam and surrounding areas.

The increased water flow in the Aliyar River has prompted officials to issue a flood warning to residents living in low-lying areas along the riverbanks. People in these areas are advised to stay vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety.

The water release from the Aliyar Dam is expected to benefit irrigation in the region, providing much-needed water for agricultural activities in the downstream areas. However, farmers and residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid entering the river or engaging in any activities near the swollen water bodies until further notice.
