Tirupur Exporters Association Funds Desilting of Canal to Replenish Moolikulam Lake

The Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has initiated the desilting of a 2.5 km canal from Noyyal River to Moolikulam Lake. The project aims to replenish groundwater and benefit residents in a 3 km radius.

Coimbatore: The Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has launched a significant initiative to desilt the canal connecting the Noyyal River to Moolikulam Lake in Tirupur. The project, which began on July 21, 2024, aims to improve water supply and groundwater recharge in the area.

Moolikulam Lake, spread across 26 acres, is located on the Tirupur-Uthukuli Road. The canal, which feeds the lake, originates from the Anaikadu area and travels approximately 2.5 kilometers. The Vaergal Organization has been maintaining this water system for the past seven years.

The desilting work focuses on clearing the canal that runs from the Noyyal River. The TEA Foundation is providing financial support for this project, with contributions from its members in the Uthukuli Road area. The canal, starting from the central Anaikadu area of Tirupur city, passes through Palayakadu, Karumarapalayam, and Mannarai before reaching Moolikulam.

Due to its urban route, the canal has been clogged with bushes and sewage at various points. The desilting operation aims to clear these obstructions, allowing flood waters from the Noyyal River to flow freely into the lake. This initiative is expected to recharge groundwater resources, benefiting residents within a 3-kilometer radius.

The inauguration ceremony for this project took place on July 21, 2024, at 9:30 AM near the Anaikadu Check Dam.

The event was led by K.M. Subramaniam, President of the Tirupur Exporters Association, and attended by other TEA officials including Treasurer Gopalakrishnan, General Secretary Thirukumaran, and Joint Secretary Kumar Duraisamy. Tirupur Corporation Commissioner Pavan Kumar IAS was present as the chief guest.

Members of the Vaergal Organization also participated in the event. The organization expressed its gratitude to K.M. Subramaniam and the TEA members for their immediate support when approached for assistance with this project.

This initiative demonstrates a collaborative effort between local businesses and environmental organizations to address water management issues in Tirupur, potentially serving as a model for similar projects in the region.
