Police Issue Warning Against Forceful Customer Solicitation in Coimbatore's Big Bazaar Street

Coimbatore police warn shop owners and employees on Big Bazaar Street against forceful customer solicitation. CCTV footage shows incidents of harassment, leading to public outcry and police action.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have issued a stern warning to shop owners and employees on Big Bazaar Street against forcefully soliciting customers. This action comes in response to recent incidents of harassment and misbehavior towards potential customers, particularly women, captured on CCTV cameras.

Big Bazaar Street, one of the prominent commercial areas in Coimbatore, is home to numerous textile shops, jewelry stores, and grocery outlets. Recent complaints from the public have highlighted a disturbing trend where young employees from these shops, especially textile and jewelry stores, have been aggressively approaching passersby and forcing them to enter their establishments.

A CCTV footage from June showed a young shop employee obstructing a woman's path and forcefully trying to make her enter the shop. The incident escalated when the agitated woman questioned and attacked the employee, who retaliated by assaulting her. This video evidence has sparked public outrage and demands for action from the district administration and police.

In response to these incidents, the police have now put up warning boards in the shopping areas. The notice states that cases will be registered under Section 292 of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act against individuals hired to solicit customers aggressively. Furthermore, shop owners who employ such individuals will be considered as abettors and face legal consequences.

The B-1 Big Bazaar Street Police Station has placed these warning boards throughout the area to ensure compliance. They have also released phone numbers for the public to report any such incidents:
