Heavy floods in Thoovanam Falls increase water inflow to Amaravathi Dam in Tirupur

Intense flooding at Thoovanam Falls, a major catchment area of Amaravathi Dam near Udumalaipettai, has led to a significant increase in water inflow for the second consecutive day.

Tirupur: The Amaravathi Dam in Tirupur district, near Udumalaipettai, is experiencing a substantial increase in water inflow due to heavy flooding in its main catchment area for the second consecutive day. The current inflow to the dam has reached 4,686 cubic feet per second.

In response to this situation, authorities are releasing 4,500 cubic feet of surplus water through the main sluice gates as a precautionary measure to ensure the dam's safety.

The water level in the dam has reached 87.80 feet out of its total capacity of 90 feet.

Continuous rainfall in various catchment areas, including Pambar, Thoovanam, Maraiyur, and Kanthalur, is expected to further increase the water inflow. As a result, the Public Works Department has advised residents of more than 50 riverside villages, including Kallapuram, Rudhrapalayam, Kolumam, Madathukulam, and Karathozhuvu, to move to safer locations.

The rising water levels and increased inflow have put the authorities on high alert. They are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to manage the water release and ensure the safety of the dam and surrounding areas. Local residents are urged to stay informed about the latest updates and follow the instructions given by the district administration.
