Heavy flood at Lakkam Falls increases water inflow to Amaravathi Dam

Heavy rains in Amaravathi Dam's catchment areas have led to flooding at Lakkam Falls, a key water source. The dam's water level has risen to 88 feet, prompting increased vigilance by officials.

Tirupur: The Amaravathi Dam in Udumalaipettai, Tirupur district, is experiencing a significant increase in water inflow due to heavy flooding at Lakkam Falls, one of its primary catchment areas. The dam's catchment areas, including Pambaru, Thoovanam, Marayur, and Kanthalur, have been receiving very heavy rainfall.

The flood situation at Lakkam Falls, located in the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border area of Marayur, has resulted in a current water inflow of 7,000 cubic feet per second to the Amaravathi Dam.

As a precautionary measure to ensure the dam's safety, surplus water exceeding 1,500 cubic feet is being released through the main sluice gates for the second consecutive day.

The water level in the Amaravathi Dam, which has a total capacity of 90 feet, has now risen above 88 feet.

With the continuous increase in water inflow, Public Works Department officials are engaged in intensive monitoring on a rotational basis. The situation remains under close observation as the inflow shows no signs of abating.
