Residents Stage Hunger Strike Against Encroachment in TVS Colony in Coimbatore

Residents of Coimbatore's TVS Colony staged a hunger strike during the "Ungalai Thedi Ungal Ooril" program, protesting officials' failure to implement a Madras High Court order on removing encroachments at the colony's entrance.

Coimbatore: Residents of Pattanam, TVS Colony in Coimbatore staged a hunger strike in front of the District Collector during the "Ungalai Thedi Ungal Ooril" (Coming to you in your town) program.

The protest was against officials who failed to implement a Madras High Court order regarding the removal of encroachments at the colony's entrance.

According to a letter, on October 31, 2023, encroachments were removed from the public land in Survey No. 37/3 as per the Madras High Court order W.P.No. 28218/2021. Stones and walls were cleared to ensure unobstructed passage for the public and traffic. However, residents claim that the encroachment was not properly measured and boundary stones were not placed.

The encroacher has now placed a banner claiming ownership of the cleared land and threatening legal action against public use. This has caused obstruction to the general public and traffic using the common pathway.

A recent judgment by the Madras High Court on July 5, 2024, ordered the complete and swift removal of the encroachment. Despite this, the issue persists, affecting residents of Thirukumaran Nagar, VIP Nagar, and Srinivasa Nagar.

The protesters are urging authorities to take appropriate action by properly measuring the area, placing boundary stones, and completely removing the encroachment to ensure unhindered access for the public and smooth flow of traffic in the affected areas.
