The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has submitted a list of 15 locations to the Revenue Department for installing automatic rain gauge devices. This initiative aims to improve rainfall measurement and planning for the city.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has taken a proactive step towards better rainfall management by proposing 15 locations for the installation of automatic rain gauge devices. This move comes as part of the city's efforts to enhance its preparedness for the South-West Monsoon and improve overall water management.
Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran confirmed that the list of proposed locations has been sent to the district administration for consideration. The automatic rain gauge devices are expected to provide accurate rainfall measurements, enabling the civic body to plan precautionary measures more effectively and study rainfall patterns for better stormwater drain design and rainwater harvesting initiatives.
District Revenue Officer M. Sharmila elaborated on the current status of rain gauge installations in the district. She stated that 50 automatic rain gauge devices have already been installed, with work on four more devices currently in progress. Regarding the CCMC's proposal, Sharmila explained, "After receiving the list of 15 places that the CCMC has proposed for installation of rain gauge devices, we will forward it to the Commissioner of Revenue Administration and Disaster Management. Upon approval and sanction of funds, the installation works would begin."
The initiative is particularly timely as the outskirts of Coimbatore have been experiencing heavy rainfall with the onset of the South-West Monsoon. The accurate measurement of rainfall will allow the CCMC to implement more effective rainwater harvesting strategies and take necessary precautionary measures during intense rainfall events.
In addition to the rain gauge installations, Sharmila revealed that a seismic centre is being established on the Bharathiar University premises. This development further underscores the district's commitment to enhancing its disaster preparedness and management capabilities.
