Coimbatore: The 135th inaugural celebration of the Pavalakkodi Kummi Dance Group was held with great enthusiasm at the Mahaliyamman Temple grounds in Chettipalayam, Perur, Coimbatore. The event showcased the traditional Kummi dance of the Kongu region, with hundreds of women participating in the colorful performance.

The celebration began with devotees bringing "Mulaippari" (sprouted grains) from the Vinayagar Temple and offering it to the goddess at the Mahaliyamman Temple. The spectacle of hundreds of women, dressed in traditional Tamil attire of the same color, carrying Mulaippari and dancing to the rhythmic beats of the Jamap music, captivated the onlookers.

Married women observed fasting and wore sarees of the same color, while young girls dressed in pavadai chattai (traditional skirt and blouse).

The dancers moved gracefully, holding Mulaippari in their hands, creating a mesmerizing sight for the audience. A large number of spectators gathered to witness and enjoy the inaugural performance.

The event coordinators highlighted that the Valli Kummi dance, originating from the Kongu region, has gained popularity not only in Tamil Nadu but also in foreign countries. They noted that an increasing number of people are appreciating and enjoying Valli Kummi dance performances.

This celebration not only showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Kongu region but also emphasized the efforts to preserve and promote traditional art forms like Kummi dance.
