AITUC Stages Protest Demanding Minimum Wages for Workers

AITUC held a protest in Coimbatore's Sivananda Colony, demanding minimum wages for rural development workers. The demonstration, led by state secretary Arumugam, highlighted the government's inaction despite a 2017 order.

Coimbatore: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) staged a protest today in Sivananda Colony, Coimbatore, demanding minimum wages for Tamil Nadu Rural Development Department workers. The demonstration was inaugurated by AITUC's state secretary and former Valparai MLA Arumugam, with district general secretary Thangavel presiding over the event.

The protestors emphasized that despite a government order issued in 2017, no action has been taken to provide statutory minimum wages to workers who have been serving in essential roles in rural local bodies for over 42 years. They urged the government to take immediate steps to disburse pending financial benefits with retrospective effect.

Following the demonstration, the workers submitted a petition to the Additional Joint Commissioner of Labour in Coimbatore, requesting intervention to bring their demands to the government's attention. The protest was peacefully concluded after the submission of the petition.

The AITUC's action highlights the ongoing struggle of rural development workers in Tamil Nadu, who play a crucial role in maintaining essential services in village panchayats. The union's demand for implementation of the 2017 government order underscores the gap between policy announcements and their execution, particularly in the realm of workers' rights and fair compensation.
