This move comes after noticing a concerning trend where many parents forego helmets while dropping off or picking up their children from school.
City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishan expressed the urgency of the project, emphasizing the collective responsibility to safeguard young commuters. "The traffic police officers will start by visiting schools across the city, engaging with school management committees, teachers, and parent-teacher associations to drive the message home," he stated.
Once these key groups are well-informed, they are expected to extend the importance of helmet use to the broader community of parents and students. Additionally, traffic police posted near schools will also directly communicate with parents, highlighting the legal and safety risks of not wearing helmets.
There have been alarming observations of parents transporting children in unsafe conditions, including multiple children on a single two-wister, leading to potentially dangerous situations. "Transporting young children without helmets, particularly in risky driving conditions, poses a significant threat to their safety," commented a traffic police officer involved in the initiative.
