District Police Supervisor Holds Methanol Regulation Meeting with Factory Owners in Coimbatore

Following multiple deaths caused by methanol-laced illicit liquor, Coimbatore's district authorities take stringent action to monitor methanol use in factories.

Coimbatore: In the wake of over 40 deaths due to the consumption of illicit liquor containing high levels of methanol in Karunapuram village, Kallakurichi district, the state has intensified measures to supervise the use of methanol across various industries. This chemical component often mixed in illicit liquor has been held responsible for the casualties.

As a step towards safeguarding public health and enforcing stricter regulations, a pivotal meeting with owners of 11 factories that use methanol in their operations was conducted at the district police office in Coimbatore. The session, led by District Police Supervisor V. Badrinarayanan, took place on June 20.

This industrial hub hosts numerous factories where methanol, a chemical of dangerous potency if mishandled, is utilized. The meeting emphasized proper management and monitoring of methanol to prevent future medical emergencies and potential fatalities.

Various recommendations and guidelines were proposed during the meeting, focusing on the improved surveillance of methanol storage and its safe usage amidst the rising concerns over public health and safety.
