District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati launched a tree plantation drive in Thondamuthur under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The campaign began in the Meenakshipuram area covering ten panchayats in Thondamuthur.

Coimbatore: In an eco-friendly initiative, District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati has commenced a vast tree plantation drive across ten village panchayats in the Thondamuthur area, Coimbatore. This green endeavor is part of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and began on June 12 in Meenakshipuram.

According to the Rural Development Directorate, Chennai, the project has been allocated a target of planting 127,420 saplings across various public spaces, road sides, and riverbanks within the district for the fiscal year 2024-25. Currently, 39,477 saplings have been planted. Prompted by World Environment Day, 5,382 saplings were specifically planted in a recent push.

The district has also marked remarkable progress in nursery production under this initiative. There are 12 existing nurseries and plans for 12 additional facilities which, combined, have produced over 175,560 seedlings. This production boost will support ongoing and future plantation activities, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and community involvement in Thondamuthur as well as broader Coimbatore.
