Precautionary Measures Taken in Valparai Ahead of Southwest Monsoon Season

In anticipation of the southwest monsoon, a consultation meeting was held in Valparai with officials led by the Pollachi Sub Collector Catherine Saranya to discuss and enforce precautions.

Coimbatore: As Valparai braces for the onset of the southwest monsoon season, which typically starts in June and lasts until October, a crucial meeting was convened at the Valparai Tahsildar office.

Under the leadership of Pollachi Sub Collector Catherine Saranya and other government officials, the meeting focused on implementing a range of precautionary measures to mitigate potential risks associated with the upcoming heavy rains.

Valparai, home to important reservoirs like Sholayar Dam, Chinnakallar Dam, Neerar Dam, and Akkamalai Check Dam, experiences significant inflows that could lead to flooding in rivers during the monsoon. To prevent water from entering residential areas and to safeguard against falling trees and landslides on roads, the authorities have mapped vulnerable locations and devised safety plans.

Additionally, the meeting detailed the establishment of seven camps as precautionary measures, adapting facilities such as Valparai Government Arts College, Boys Higher Secondary School, Municipal Marriage Hall, and a government school near Sholaiyar Dam, to accommodate residents if needed. Special attention is being given to individuals over 70 years of age, ensuring their relocation to these camps ahead of heavy rainfall. The health department is also set to prevent the spread of diseases like dengue and malaria through extensive vector control activities and stocking up on essential medicines.

There are further plans to ensure the smooth operation of government buses and to quickly address any power outages identified by the electricity department. Wildlife management efforts by the forestry department aim to prevent wild animals from entering inhabited areas, particularly in regions where tribal communities reside.

This comprehensive approach emphasizes the prioritization of public safety and preparedness for any eventualities during the monsoon period.
