The Ukkadam-Aathupalam flyover in Coimbatore, expected to ease traffic congestion, is set to open for public access by June. With 92 percent of construction complete, final tests are due at the month's end.
Coimbatore: The long-awaited Ukkadam-Aathupalam flyover in Coimbatore, initiated in 2018 to alleviate traffic congestion, is slated to open for public trial by the end of June, officials from the Highways Department have confirmed. The construction of the flyover began first from Ukkadam to Karumbukadai, and was later extended to Aathupalam following the proposal to expand the project which connects to Pollachi/Palakkad roads.
Engineering evaluations were recently conducted by a team led by Panneerselvam, a supervising engineer from the Salem division. The team observed cracking in some sections of the road connecting Aathupalam to Selvapuram bypass, which alarmed the officials. Following these findings, the Coimbatore division’s supervising engineer and his team notified the contractor to rectify the issues already identified.
In its final stages of construction, the flyover has reached 92% completion. It promises to significantly reduce the daily traffic snarls experienced by commuters between Ukkadam and Athupalam. The authorities remain confident that the construction will be concluded promptly and the flyover will be operational as scheduled.
