Heavy Rain and Storm Damage Nearly One Lakh Banana Trees Near Pollachi

Last night, a severe storm accompanied by heavy rain damaged around 100,000 banana trees in areas around Anaimalai near Pollachi, causing significant financial loss to the farmers.

Coimbatore: In a devastating turn of events, a powerful storm along with heavy rainfall wreaked havoc near Pollachi, particularly in the areas surrounding Anaimalai including Vettaikaranputhur and Sethumadai. The storm, occurring amidst a severe ongoing drought over the past few months, has led to the uprooting of approximately one lakh banana trees that were cultivated over hundreds of acres.

The affected farmers, who had invested heavily in irrigation amidst the water scarcity, reported losses amounting to nearly 75 lakh rupees due to the storm. Having invested thousands of rupees per acre in water alone, the farmers now face a dire situation as their efforts to safeguard their investments have been ruined overnight.

These farmers have now called upon the Tamil Nadu government to consider their plight and provide appropriate compensation for the extensive damages incurred. The community awaits a timely response, hoping for support in recovering from this significant agricultural setback.
