The Kundam Festival, culminating in vivid rituals including fire walking, was held at Arulmigu Mahaaliamman Temple in Mettupalayam on May 8, following a series of pre-festival religious events.
Coimbatore: The Arulmigu Mahaaliamman Temple located in Pakkugar Street, Mettupalayam, recently concluded its vibrant Kundam Festival. The festivities began last month on the 23rd with a Ganapathi Homam and have included various significant rituals like Thiruvilakku Pooja, Agni Kambam setting, and bringing holy water from the nearby Mariamman Temple.
The main event featured the lowering of the Kundam (sacred pot) on May 8, preceded by a colorful procession that saw the deity elaborately decorated and paraded through the town in a chariot, to the rhythmic sounds of traditional ‘Tharai Thappattai' music. The ceremonial procession wound its way to the temple, gathering fervor among the community.

Following the arrival at the temple, the main ‘Kundam Lowering’ ritual commenced. Chief priest Dakshinamoorthy, holding a sacred vel (spear), led the ceremony, circling the Kundam and offering prayers while devotional music played in the background. Other priests, Suresh, Manoj, and Sudharshan, participated, each carrying sacred elements like the Kolam basket and Sivan Karagam into the Kundam. Devotees followed in succession, stepping into the Kundam to fulfill their vows by fire walking, expressing their devotion in a profound display of faith.
This year's festival saw a significant turnout, with hundreds of devotees participating in the religious fervor, reaffirming their faith and cultural heritage.
