Coimbatore Corporation Administration Decides to Dredge Bhavani Dam

Due to the absence of rain, decreasing water levels prompted Coimbatore Municipal Administration to submit a dredging plan for Bhavani Dam.

Coimbatore: As the region faces declining water levels due to lack of rainfall, the Coimbatore Corporation Administration has submitted a plan to dredge Bhavani Dam. Water sources such as Siruvani, Bhavani, and Aliyar serve as critical reservoirs for Coimbatore. However, with no recent rains, the water levels in these dams have been rapidly decreasing. The total height of the Siruvani Dam’s water storage capacity is 50 feet, but as per recent reports, it has diminished to just 11.15 feet.

Municipal Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran recently inspected the Siruvani Dam area to assess if Kerala is supplying water as per agreements.

Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran commented, “From Siruvani, we have planned to ensure a water supply of 30 crore liters daily until the second week of June, as provided by the Kerala authorities. Currently, there is no need to dredge the Siruvani Dam, while we have initiated plans to dredge the Bhavani Dam. Last week, the authorities from the Corporation Administration’s executive department also inquired about dredging Bhavani Dam. A project report has been submitted regarding this.”

As Coimbatore relies on these crucial water reserves, the efforts to maintain adequate water levels remain a priority for the administration.
