Coimbatore Railway Junction Third Among Top Revenue Generators in Southern Railways

Coimbatore Railway Junction ranked third in revenue generation in Southern Railways which includes Tamilnadu and Kerala for 2023-24, with Rs 325 crores. Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore, which secured first and second places had revenues of Rs 1216 crores and Rs 564 crores respectively.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Railway Junction continues to excel as a top revenue generator in Southern Railways, holding the third position by generating a significant revenue of Rs 325 crores during the financial year 2023-24. The junction trails behind Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore, which secured first and second places with revenues of Rs 1216 crores and Rs 564 crores, respectively.

Despite its high revenue, Coimbatore lacks the divisional headquarters status that is given to other major revenue contributors like Chennai, Trivandrum, Madurai, and Trichy. Currently, within Coimbatore district, railway jurisdiction is confusingly split amongst three divisions—Salem, Palakkad, and Madurai over short distances, which hampers efficient management and development. There is a strong call from local authorities and stakeholders to reconstitute Coimbatore into a singular railway division to streamline operations.

Moreover, compared to stations with less revenue, Coimbatore Junction lacks adequate train maintenance facilities, which restricts the initiation of new services. Proposals to enhance these facilities at Coimbatore are pending, highlighting the need for immediate attention to improve infrastructure and service capabilities. Furthermore, while major stations are seeing redevelopment, Coimbatore's station redevelopment is lagging which if expedited, could substantially benefit the region.

Rail enthusiasts and trade bodies in Coimbatore have proposed several improvements including the restoration of key train services and increasing the frequency of direct trains from Coimbatore to major cities such as Delhi, Jabalpur, and Chennai. New connections to cities like Patna and Kolkata have also been suggested to enhance connectivity and boost revenue.

If these issues are addressed effectively, it is projected that Coimbatore Railway Junction could generate revenues up to Rs 600 crores annually, benefiting both passengers and the railways. The local stakeholders continue to press for a fair and transparent resolution to these ongoing challenges.
