Broadband Connectivity to Reach All Tamil Nadu Gram Panchayats: IT Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan at anniversary function CIO Klub, Coimbatore

In a major digital push, PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan announced the rollout of broadband connectivity on fibre in 12,650 gram panchayats across Tamil Nadu. This move aims to empower villagers through a social equity platform.

Coimbatore: During the 9th anniversary celebrations of the Coimbatore chapter of CiO Klub (Chief Information Officers) at Le Meridien Hotel on Saturday, March 2, 2024, PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan, the Tamil Nadu Minister for IT and Digital Services, revealed plans to expand broadband connectivity on fibre to all 12,650 gram panchayats in the state within the next few months. This initiative is set to serve as a social equity platform that will empower rural populations by providing them access to digital resources.

The Minister emphasized the transformative potential of Information Technology in government functioning and improving the standard of living for citizens. He criticized the outdated approach that requires citizens to physically approach government offices for grievance redressal, advocating instead for online platforms where grievances can be lodged and resolved swiftly. Thiagarajan pointed out the need for government officials to be more proactive and reach out to citizens to solve their problems directly.

Highlighting challenges within the government, Thiagarajan mentioned that only 60% of sanctioned job positions are currently filled, putting a strain on the state's resources for salary and pension commitments. He called for increased efficiency in government spending and timely project implementation to better serve the citizens.

The literacy rate in Tamil Nadu has improved significantly, thanks to a century of focused educational and social justice policies. The Minister shared statistics showing that 85% of girls now graduate from high school, and half of the students of college-going age pursue higher education. This has led to a demand for the creation of job opportunities that match the talents being developed. He also noted the attraction of global companies to Tamil Nadu, with significant investments in Madurai and Chennai, highlighting the government's efforts through finishing schools and training programmes to make students job-ready.

The event also saw the participation of Dr. N.Raveendran, President of the CIO Klub, Coimbatore, who emphasized the critical role of CIOs in organizational and societal development. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of 'Hall of Fame' awards to CiOs who have effectively implemented IT projects in their companies.
