Tirupur Pioneers as First City in Tamil Nadu to Adopt CII - IGBC Green City Framework

In a groundbreaking move, Tirupur Municipal Corporation has registered under the IGBC Green Cities rating system, marking it as the first city in Tamil Nadu to embark on a journey towards sustainable urban development. This initiative aims to transform Tirupur into a world-class green urban space, highlighting the city's commitment to environmental stewardship and quality of life enhancement.

Tirupur: In an historic achievement, the Tirupur Municipal Corporation has officially enrolled in the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green City Framework, becoming the first city in Tamil Nadu to take such a significant step towards sustainable urban development. The IGBC Green Cities rating system is designed as a comprehensive tool to help cities set and achieve measurable sustainability goals, thereby contributing to the creation of green urban environments on par with global standards.

The system's adoption is expected to bring about numerous benefits to Tirupur, including enhanced air quality, expanded urban greenery, efficient use of land, improved mobility, reduced energy demand by 20-30%, increased water efficiency by 30-40%, and effective waste management through segregation and recycling. Additionally, it promotes e-governance, encourages active citizen participation, and aims to improve the overall quality of life for its residents.

A meeting was held today with Mr. N Dinesh Kumar, Mayor of Tirupur Municipal Corporation; Mr. PavanKumar G Giriyappanavas, Commissioner of Tirupur Municipal Corporation; Ms. Sangeetha Velkrishna, Chairperson of CII Tirupur; Mr. Elango, Vice Chairman of CII Tirupur; Mr. Milton, Immediate Past Chairman of CII Tirupur; and the IGBC team to discuss the transformative impact of the IGBC Green Cities Framework on the city. This registration under the IGBC Green Cities rating system positions Tirupur as a trailblazer among existing cities nationwide in adopting green city principles at the city level.

Several cities across India, including New Town in West Bengal, Rajkot in Gujarat, and Pune in Maharashtra, have already implemented the IGBC Green Cities rating system to set lofty urban development goals.

CII Tirupur has taken further steps towards sustainability by initiating a cluster initiative for Green Co rating, with 15 industries participating in 2023-24 and the rating to be awarded in February 2024. Moreover, CII Tirupur has successfully registered 25 companies in Tirupur, showcasing a united effort towards achieving carbon neutrality.
