SS Public Service Organization Requests Local Holiday for Koniamman Temple Car Festival in Coimbatore

In anticipation of the Koniamman Temple Car Festival, the SS Public Service Organization has submitted a petition to the district administration, urging for a local holiday in Coimbatore, drawing parallels to similar practices in Madurai and during Onam in Kerala.

Coimbatore: Revered as the guardian deity of Coimbatore, the Koniamman Temple, located in Town Hall, is set to celebrate its grand Car Festival on February 28. In light of this, the SS Public Service Organization has made a formal request to the district administration on February 15, advocating for a local holiday in Coimbatore to enable the community to participate in the festivities.

The petition highlighted that thousands of devotees are expected to attend the festival, a significant cultural event akin to those observed in other districts like Madurai, where local holidays are declared for major temple festivals. Additionally, it was pointed out that local holidays are granted in Coimbatore for Onam, underscoring the importance of recognizing the Koniamman Temple Car Festival similarly.

The organization stressed the need for a local holiday on February 28, to honor the tradition and enable the faithful to partake in the celebrations without constraints. This request aims to elevate the festival's significance on par with other major festivals celebrated in the region and acknowledges the cultural and spiritual value it holds for the local community.
